Coming with a summary of a Tom Robbins novel is a difficult task, and this novel, Villa Incognito, its eighth edition, is particularly difficult to summarize. It starts with a mythological creature, a tanuki. The novel's plot begins with two women, sisters, a circus and four MIAs from the Vietnam War.
What follows is a convoluted adventure which I am not in favor Robbins even know the whole story. The novel did for fun although vague, reading.
Robbins fans should definitely read this novel because I'm sure they already have. If you have not yet read Robbins, do not start with it. I think it takes a fan of his work, someone who is accustomed to his style of writing and storytelling, to assess this novel. If you have not read any of his other works, I'm afraid you'd be turned away from him entirely by this strange novel.
As always, is the style of writing that I love Robbins. It has a unique way of describing the characters, setting, events, etc. It permeates also his novels with bits of philosophy, religion and art that I have always found interesting and entertaining. Usually, stories and the characters are charming and attractive to me, but this novel left a little of that.
For me, I did not feel a deep connection with this novel. He also met with vague and distant, I could not grasp the plot or its characters. I was left feeling a little confused and turned off at writing, which is exactly the opposite of what I usually feel when ending a Robbins novel.
After finishing Villa Incognito, I wanted read one of my favorite Robbins (such as Still Life with Woodpecker) to reassure me that Robbins is still among my top three favorite authors.
Unfortunately, This novel made me feel confused. I did not know quite what had happened in the novel. I was not sure of the point. For me, it was as Robbins let his characters take over, not really care if the plot made sense or felt finished the drive.
Tom Robbins is a writer Contemporary American well known. His style is unique and strange. A student of art and philosophy, these subjects are still evident in his writing. It combines two important trio – sex, drugs and rock & roll with art, religion and philosophy.
For fans of Robbins, this novel completes its library, it should be played. For others, as I said before, read his other works first. This is not yours his writing.
Although I do not particularly care for this novel, not a bad book. I think there is something to learn her, as with all Robbins novels, but for me the lesson or theme is not as evident as in his other writings. Villa Incognito is the read, I'm not sure I'll read it soon.
