Long ago, but no more than memory, some friends and I riding from Oregon to Mexico to raise money for Special Olympics and some local service clubs in our community. The children needed a van for 10 passengers to afford to drive to the nearby bowling because the bowling was closed. This was one of their favorite activities.

We chose to find sponsors between $ 01 and $ 10 per mile and hike. If you do this, I recommend flying to Portland and taking the bus in Astoria, OR and then crossing the bridge to Washington and then turning around and never look back.

The coastline along the way is the way most picturesque of the United States and you quarter tailwind almost the whole way. The Bike Centennial Route maps have the entire way, 3-cards in all. Fairly easy to follow and once you get there you need to focus on your cadence.

Once your body adapts to the pace or "Pace" It is amazing how many miles you can go and speed you can produce. I think I was averaging 35 mph or something like that and the more recent era of electronic meter counters were removed and we started the day 1000 mile plus journey to give us 10. 10 has started only 3 finished.

We raised some money and a great time with great memories and it sure makes it worthwhile. Perhaps this is something you might consider especially if you live on West Coast of the United States. Consider all this in 2006.
